Boy Meets Boy: Episode 2
I want to see what these guys can bring to the table. —James
As the sun rises on Day 2, James and Andra have a quiet poolside breakfast and plan for the day. Meanwhile, not too far away at the Mates' House, a dozen men -- gay or pretending to be -- share the joys of communal living: sun bathing, swimming, flirting.and waiting in line for the bathroom.
The first activity of the day has a western theme. James and six of the mates are decked out in cowboy hats and flashy boots for an afternoon of line dancing in the hot desert sun. There they meet Jorge, their dance instructor. Once they've got a grasp of the basic steps, the guys partner up and attempt a few more intimate variations.
"I've been fondling you, basically, for ten minutes.
Let's go sit down and talk." —James
After a fun, sweaty afternoon, James has to pick someone from the six for a solo dance and a one-on-one encounter. James selects Franklin, as he has been curious about the personality of the dark-haired, grey-eyed sommelier from Wisconsin, but hadn't had much time to get to know him during day one. He likes what he hears during their twilight time together; perhaps Franklin has managed to improve his chances.
"It was fine until I got on the rock itself." —James
When the next morning comes, the remaining six Mates head off with our Leading Man for a day of rock climbing. Half way up the rock face, James is hit with a paralyzing wave of fear. With a few deep breaths and encouraging words from Wes, he regains his composure and makes it up to the top. The journey gives him a deeper appreciation for the view.and for Wes as well.
For his one-on-one, James once again focuses on someone he hasn't yet gotten to know well but would like to know better: Darren. Before a romantic mountain vista, the two share lunch and discuss their hopes and dreams.
"Today I realized there could possibly be somebody here
that James could really care deeply about." —Andra
Over dinner, Andra reveals that while James was out with half the guys each day, she was taking the other half gift shopping. One by one, each presents his gift to James in the hope of offering up something special that will help him stand out from the group. Wes and Paul seem to score points with travel-oriented books. Michael boldly tries to curry favor with a gift for Andra - a picture frame - stating, "any friend of yours is a friend of mine." This entices a smile from Andra and a hug from James but also some very chilly scowls from the competition.
"I really thought it would be easy to make these cuts, but it's not." —James
Once again, decision time. Three men have to be eliminated, but now there's a catch: the twelve mates are divided into groups of four, and James must eliminate one guy from each group. James bids a reluctant goodbye to Jim and Paul who, unbeknownst to James, were both secretly straight, as well as Marc who, although gay, never felt much chemistry with our Leading Man.
"My experience here is kind of a mirror image
of how people who are in the closet, still, are experiencing daily life." —Jim
